DESCRIPTION
- This is perhaps the finest recording of the complete Divine Liturgy in
Slavonic, including all the priests parts. The 30-voice all male chorus, comprised
of first and second generation Americans of Russian descent, sings in the style of Serge
Jaroffs Don Cossack Choir (but even better). There is an extremely smooth blend and
balance of voices, and truly luscious sound, with an incredible basso-profundo. The
priest, the late Fr. George Burdikoff, has a beautiful, rich, full bass voice; he is
reputed to have had one of the finest bass voices in the Russian Orthodox Church. The
conductor, George Margitich, was the successor to the late Serge Jaroff, and most members
of the New Jersey based Russian Liturgical Singers had sung under the legendary
Mr. Jaroff. However, Mr. Margitich achieves a better balance of voices, especially in
controlling the first tenors, and keeping them from screaming and going sharp.
-
- Included here is the entire Divine Liturgy, except for the Epistle and
Gospel sequence and Communion, with an additional selection at the end, a marvelous Kiev
Monastery Chant Blessed is the Man (Psalm 1). This is recorded in a concert hall,
not during an actual church service, so the sound is more controlled and balanced, and
there are no extraneous sounds. It is sung in a totally prayerful and spiritual way,
and without any pauses, the way church services (not concerts) are done.
