II. AUDIO CASSETTES/AUDIO BOOKS (in English)
DESCRIPTION: This unique, second Treasury of Orthodox Christian Prayers, a set of four audio cassettes, makes accessible some additional marvelous examples of the rich Orthodox heritage of prayer. This set contains six prayerfully chanted Akathists to six very popular and beloved saints, plus a reading of The Life of St. Mary of Egypt. For most of the saints, their Troparion and Kontakion are included at the end. Most American Orthodox are not aware of the enormous treasure of Akathists that is a part of the Orthodox heritage. Not only is the dedicated labor of translating into English increasing numbers of Akathists to the saints enabling Orthodox in America to receive this part of their Orthodox inheritance, but new Akathists are also being written to recently glorified/canonized saints, thus demonstrating that Orthodox hymnography is still very much alive. Each of these Akathists is an extended hymn-prayer in 13 sections, with refrains, that praises and rejoices in the life-story of each saint, teaching us about them and helping us to become friends with them. These seven saints are "wonder-workers," who continue to be actively involved in the lives of the faithful, helping us in our struggles, rejoicing with us in our joys, guiding us along our daily paths, and interceding for us. Listening to these cassettes is an excellent way to discover how knowing the saints can greatly enrich our lives, or expand the relationship that we already have with them. The saints are the true heroes whom God has given to us as examples to follow, as they themselves followed and imitated Christ's example. Listening to these Akathists and Life (which in itself really is an extended prayer), can help us to know these seven Friends of God a little better. These prayers are also beautiful and powerful evocations of the life of faith, and can therefore assist the listener in cultivating greater depths and heights of knowledge and communion with the Lord. The four audio cassettes in this set are packaged in a handsome 5" x 7" white, soft plastic case, that opens like a book or video case, with two cassettes on the left and two on the right. There are attractive slip-in covers on the front, back and spine, printed on yellow card-stock, with an icon of each of the seven saints on the front cover, and detailed notes on the back. These cassettes are ideal for commuters, the sight-impaired, sick, elderly, home-bound, and for anyone who wishes to bring more prayer into his or her life.
