- OVERALL DESCRIPTION:
-
- An awesome and historic event in the life of the
Orthodox Church in North America took place on November 1st and 2nd,
2002, at the beautiful St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in metro-Detroit,
Michigan. Eight hierarchs of different jurisdictions, presided over by His Beatitude,
Metropolitan HERMAN, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), consecrated
Archimandrite IRINEU (Duvlea) as Auxiliary Bishop to His Eminence, NATHANIEL, Archbishop
of Detroit and the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America (OCA). The other 7 hierarchs
who concelebrated with Metropolitan HERMAN were: the host, Archbishop NATHANIEL (Romanian
Episcopate, OCA); Metropolitan CHRISTOPHER (Patriarchal Serbian Metropolitanate);
Archbishop KYRILL (Bulgarian Diocese, OCA); Archbishop NICOLAE (Patriarchal Romanian
Archdiocese); Bishop SERAPHIM (Canadian Archdiocese, OCA); Bishop DEMETRI (Antiochian
Archdiocese); and Bishop NIKON (Albanian Archdiocese, OCA). (photo below)

- Produced for the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of
America (OCA) by ST. INNOCENT/FIREBIRD Videos, Audios &
Books, this all-digital, professional video production
allows you to experience this magnificent event up-close. The Divine Services are
beautiful 3-camera productions, and the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy includes considerable
footage in the altar/sanctuary.
- Not only do these videos of the complete Services,
(plus the Reception and Consecration Banquet), allow you to vicariously participate in
this milestone in American Orthodoxy, but they also are of enormous educational value on
many levelsit is fascinating to view what happens during the consecration of a
bishop, and to see what happens at the altar during a Hierarchal Divine Liturgy, and
during the ordination of a deacon. In addition, the videos enable the homebound, and
others who cannot get to church, to pray the Divine Liturgy and Vespers. The marvelous
sound-track features a combined choir, conducted by the Cathedral Choir Director, Valerie
Yova Sheets, and the Assistant Director, Subdeacon John E. Lazar, augmented by the
visiting TEOFANIA Male Chorus from the Theological School in Sibiu, Romania. In
English and Romanian.

DESCRIPTION:
This magnificent 3-camera, carefully edited, all digital production
shows the complete 4-hour Hierarchal Divine Liturgy and Consecration of Bishop IRINEU,
concelebrated by eight bishops, presided over by His Beatitude HERMAN, Archbishop of
Washington and Metropolitan of All America and Canada, Primate of the Orthodox Church in
America.
After the entrance of the eight hierarchs and the entrance prayers, the
bishop-elect, Archimandrite Irineu, is presented to the bishops by two senior priests, and
reads his Profession of Faith (photo to the left), after which he is blessed by
Metropolitan HERMAN. He exchanges a kiss of peace with each of the bishops, and is led
into the altar. Then the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy begins.
After the singing of the "Holy God," the bishop-elect is brought by the
two senior priests from the center of the church to the altar through the holy doors. Then
there is the triple procession around the altar/holy table, led by two different bishops
each time (photo to the right). (This is shown from within the altar/sanctuary.)
After this the bishop-elect kneels at the right front corner of the altar, while
the eight bishops lay their hands on his head and hold the open Gospels Book over his head
(photo to the left). The clergy chant a Litany and the Metropolitan reads the Prayers of
Consecration. Archimandrite Irineu is now Bishop Irineu.
He is immediately vested in the vestments of his new office, in front of the
Holy Doors. Metropolitan HERMAN holds up each item and proclaims, "He is
worthy!" (photo to the right) While the clergy and the choir/people respond by
singing, "He is worthy!" the bishops put each vestment on the new bishop. After
being fully vested in these symbols of his new office, the new bishop is greeted by each
bishop with a triple kiss, as they welcome their new brother into
their hierarchal ranks.
After the end of the DIvine Liturgy, the new bishop is vested in the
blue bishop's Mantia (photo to the left) by sub-deacons and presented with a bishop's
staff by Metropolitan HERMAN, who then speaks to his new brother bishop of the
responsibilities of his new office.
One of the very important sacramental acts that can be done only by bishops is to
ordain. Thus the new hierarchs first major act was to ordain the Monk Sebastian (of
the Ascension Monastery, Detroit) as a Deacon (photo to the right). This is done before
the Litany before the Lord's Prayer.
A camera is in the altar/sanctuary from the entrance of the hierarchs
into the altar after the Little Entrance, until the end of the Divine Liturgy. Thus there
is considerable fascinating footage that shows what is happening at the altar.
