  DESCRIPTION

This is a superb pioneering work that should be viewed by every Orthodox person in North America, and by all those interested in Orthodoxy in America and in how to live the Orthodox Christian life. It should be a part of every Orthodox adult and youth education program across our continent. Here is a true hero for our times, who can well serve as a model of how to take up one's cross and follow Jesus Christ. This production is all digitally videotaped and edited, and is of the highest technical quality. We guarantee you will love this video set, and will be delighted to encounter this modern hero, our Apostle to America.

This video set is the first of what will be an on-going series of 30-minute documentary videos (digitally videotaped and edited) about the lives of Orthodox saints, although this inaugural video set is in 2 parts. The series has received the blessing and endorsement of the chief hierarchs of a number of America’s Orthodox jurisdictions.

wpe24.jpg (23089 bytes)These 2 videos portray both the outer and the inner achievements of Fr. John Veniaminov, the Apostle to America and Siberia, who became Bishop Innocent, and then, after 45 years as a missionary, Metropolitan Innocent of Moscow, the head of the entire Orthodox Church in Russia. The outward accomplishments of this extraordinarily gifted and much-admired pioneering hero and saint are astounding. By means of Herculean feats and self-sacrifice, it is St. Innocent who is primarily responsible for bringing the Orthodox Christian Faith to the Aleuts and other native peoples throughout Alaska, (when Alaska was a part of Russia), and establishing the Orthodox Church in North America. As the first Orthodox bishop to serve in America, and later as the head of the Orthodox Church in Russia, he laid the groundwork for the growth of Orthodoxy here in America during the past century.

An important objective of this Life of St. Innocent of Alaska is to discover how a poor orphaned boy from a remote village in the wilds of Siberia became not just an admirable human being, but a saint, and to explore the inner spiritual source from which his heroic achievements flowed. His personal example of holiness is shown to be a model for every one who seeks to live the Christian life.

In each documentary video, against a music background, the narration consists of 4 voices, alternating between the "voice of St. Innocent" (based primarily on his book, Indication of the Way Into the Kingdom of Heaven), 2 narrators, and a commentator. The extremely varied visual portion shows live footage of Siberia, where St. Innocent was born and grew up, and places in Alaska and Russia where the saint lived and worked, combined with icons, some photos, items in museums, excerpts of Divine Services, and other visuals that convey the meaning of the text, and concludes with a brief prayer to the Apostle to America in front of his relics. Each part concludes with the Troparion and Kontakion to St. Innocent, beautifully sung by a quartet.
