DESCRIPTION

Reputed as having been one of the finest of Russia’s holy places, this monastery was built by Patriarch Nikon in the 17th century, and modeled on the plan of the Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos, from which their greatest treasure came, a copy of their famous wonder-working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. Newly re-opened, you will see the Russian monastery’s history; its reconstruction; pilgrims and the cross-procession on the Iveron Icon feast day; a youth and children’s choir singing Divine Services—reflecting the educational work done with children; and daily life of the monastery, with its farm work and Divine Services. Although located in a beautiful rural setting on Lake Valdai, it is near enough the main highway between Moscow and St. Petersburg, south of Novgorod, to be readily accessible for visitors.
