Novgorod Diocese
Monasteries of Russia Series #6

30 mins. $19.95 In Russian [Made in Russia in 1997]

DESCRIPTION

Dedicated to the Transfiguration and St. Varlaam, this monastery is one of the oldest in Russia, having been founded near Novgorod at the end of the 12th century by St. Varlaam. Its beautiful main church is built in the ancient Novgorod style and had been famous for its wonderful bells. Closed by the Bolsheviks, it was re-opened in 1994 as a women’s monastery.

You will see here the history of the monastery; pilgrims and the healing water of the sacred spring; the cross-procession for St. Varlaam’s feast day; monastic obediences; singing and chanting by the sisters; venerating St. Varlaam’s relics; interviews with pilgrims, the abbess and clergy; and the destruction and gradual process of reconstruction.
